The client for this project clearly instructed our design team that they required a social eating space that also allowed for a residential space. Our design team however wanted to take this further and allow for an integrated social space that would in turn improve the flow and traffic of the public through the city centre of Coventry.

The project involved creating a housing establishment on a site established close to the motorway in Coventry. After primary and secondary research of the diverse population within Coventry and the food interest, it has. A focus on cultural eating was established and was used as a tool to bring people together in the atrium space where stalls are positioned, they can cook for each other and be involved within the process.

Creating a permeable open inviting social space was crucial to the success of the project which transferred in to the use of curved glass panels and a tensile fabric roof to promote fluidity that helped create bright and airy conditions for such social interactions to take place.

The rigid sections of the project such as the housing units required more privacy and subtle measures have been taken to ensure this such as the use of frosted glass, change of levels. These units involved the use of 3D printing as a structural tool which was a lot more efficient, reliable and a cheaper alternative than regular building procedure which ensured the project to be handed on time and lower than the anticipated budget.

30TH SEPTEMBER 2019
LOCATION: DRYDEN CENTRE DRY002, CITY CAMPUS, NTU
MINUTES OF FIRST MEETING FOR PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE COURSEWORK HELD AT 14:00 [2HRS]
Members Present:
Anthony Dalby – Module Leader
Simon Chiou – Assistance Tutor
3RD Year BArch Architecture – Students
Form groups of 4 to 5 people to work with for the duration of this project and read the brief
Formed group: Nayeem Shaik, Seline Natour, Isaac Moody, Vikas Parekh and Eyob Mulat
1ST Meeting
Members Present: Nayeem Shaik. Seline Natour. Isaac Moody. Vikas Parekh. Eyob Mulat.
Minute:
Task 1: Discussion about the brief and what the future will be like in 7 years.
Action to task: In this discussion, we all contributed our thoughts of what the future will be like in terms of architecture and business. The main topics we talked about include environmental advancements and the increasing popularity and importance in architecture, technological advancements and how it can be applied to architecture and the concept of reusability of building materials.
Task 2: Initial brainstorm and ideas about the business
Action to task: Linking to the previous discussion about what the future will look like we focused on similar ideas.
-
We started with the shortage of housing and how we can fix that in the future. These included; possible use of 3d printing for construction, using repurposed rubble, sustainable, flexible and low-cost housing. However, we concluded that this might not fix the problem as it may not make housing people want.
-
We discussed the issue of Post Brexit; the possible lack of material import so local materials may be utilised, this also offers a more environmentally viable option.
-
The idea of off-grid living solutions with self-sufficiency in mind to be more ecologically sustainable.
-
We thought about two-pronged business, one custom designs and one utilising stock designs for governmental housing purposes as the business layout/categories.
Task 3: Discussion about the initial brainstorm.
Action to task: All members contributed to the initial brainstorm then we talked to Anthony and gained some crucial advice moving forward with the ideas.
-
Instead of focusing on building new to solve housing "shortage" maybe we can look at utilising already built structures.
-
To think about strategies of keeping structural elements to reduce waste and prevent higher production of carbon during adaptation
-
Maybe 3D printing new spaces within the pre-existing structure.
Towards the end of this discussion the theme for the branding "growing within"/"organic within the grid" developed which was suggested by Isaac and we all agreed this is a good starting point of the idea.
Task 4: Delegation of roles to each team member specified in the project brief.
Action to task: After each member of the group read the brief and the description of each of the roles, everyone chose a part they desired and felt the would best suit for this project;
Nayeem Shaik - Financial Management
Seline Natour - Image Management
Isaac Moody - Technological Management
Vikas Parekh - Marketing Management
Eyob Mulat - Administrative/IT Management
Task 5: Devising a method of circulating information between team members to ensure shared responsibility of work.
Action to task: We swapped contact details to ensure that we are all reachable at all times and created a group chat to share work. This is to ensure all members are informed about everything related to this project, Eyob Mulat will take the lead on the blog. Seline takes the lead on the website, but each member will have access to it. This is to ensure that each member can upload what research they have undertaken over the course of this project. Also to ensure that all members can make direct comments on the individual study conducted by a member using the comment section. Seline Natour will take the lead on all graphics and presentation material such as boards, leaflets and website design, but all members will take an interest in all aspects of the presentation material, contributing ideas and comments. We decided to evaluate our progress and stay in contact via the group chat throughout the week and try to meet up at least once after each seminar as the project develops.
Tasks to be completed for next meeting: 2nd October 2019
-
The blog to be set up and first meeting recorded by Eyob Mulat
-
Every member to research and think about the ideas discussed in the seminar.
