The client for this project clearly instructed our design team that they required a social eating space that also allowed for a residential space. Our design team however wanted to take this further and allow for an integrated social space that would in turn improve the flow and traffic of the public through the city centre of Coventry.

The project involved creating a housing establishment on a site established close to the motorway in Coventry. After primary and secondary research of the diverse population within Coventry and the food interest, it has. A focus on cultural eating was established and was used as a tool to bring people together in the atrium space where stalls are positioned, they can cook for each other and be involved within the process.

Creating a permeable open inviting social space was crucial to the success of the project which transferred in to the use of curved glass panels and a tensile fabric roof to promote fluidity that helped create bright and airy conditions for such social interactions to take place.

The rigid sections of the project such as the housing units required more privacy and subtle measures have been taken to ensure this such as the use of frosted glass, change of levels. These units involved the use of 3D printing as a structural tool which was a lot more efficient, reliable and a cheaper alternative than regular building procedure which ensured the project to be handed on time and lower than the anticipated budget.

MINUTES OF SECOND MEETING FOR PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE COURSEWORK HELD AT 15:00 [2.5HRS]
Members Present: Nayeem Shaik. Seline Natour. Isaac Moody. Vikas Parekh. Eyob Mulat.
2ND Meeting
Minute:
Task 1: Tasks to have been completed for today
Task 1.1: Blog to have been set up and updated by Eyob Mulat
Action to task 1.1: Blog has been set up on Wix, and first meeting added.
Task 1.2: Research into the initial idea to have a further discussion about business plan
Action to task 1.2: Every member has researched into their role according to the brief and came ready to discuss further the business plan.
Task 2: Discussion about the business plan.
Action to task: After each member looked into their specific roles from the brief, we came to a point in which we decided the basic plan of the proposed business. The idea was that we are a firm that at first had previous projects of doing small sections of 3D printing interior furniture. Then we started doing parts of buildings, and now in 2026, we want to be able to manufacture extensions/adaptations of buildings. In the first meeting, we discussed the possible use of 3D printing material, and we carried this idea forward to maybe entirely 3D print the structure. During this process, we agreed that there would be a linear progression in terms of technology, and as a business, we aim to grow with the progression.
Task 3: Deciding on the name of our Business.
Action to task: After forming an initial idea for the business, we decided to come up with a name that best represents the brand. The following are various suggestions we had;
-
3D-Studios
-
Print-Tech Studio’s
-
Renovate
-
Adapt
-
Design Abstract
-
Print-tech Studio's
As a group, we all liked the name Adapt and thought initially “ADAPT Design”. However, we would be starting as a small company, and not be a large enough business to be called design. Therefore we decided on “ADAPT Studio”, the name best suits on our central idea.
Tasks to be completed for next meeting: 07th October 2019
The Blog to be updated by Eyob Mulat
Isaac Moody and Nayeem Shaik to research the financial and technological side of the proposed business ideas such as possible costs and business sectors in the 3D printing field.
Vikas Parekh to initially research about 3D printing and who our target market could be.
Seline Natour to start researching other websites of companies that may be similar to our idea, to get inspiration for how to start our website.
